Dissertations to Be Defended
PhD Graduates

The purpose of doctoral studies shall be to develop scientists able to carry out independently works of scientific research and experimental (social and cultural) development and to resolve scientific problems. Doctoral studies shall ensure for the person, who has completed doctoral studies and received a degree of the doctor of science, a sufficient competence: most progressive knowledge of the research work, areas of science and their interconnection; specialized abilities and methodologies to resolve problems of scientific research and other areas or to develop professional practice; ability to work independently, knowledge of science and profession in order to create new ideas or processes, participate in studies and other activity.

Degree of the doctor of science shall be awarded to a person who has successfully completed fulltime (up to 4 years) or part-time (up to 6 years) doctoral studies prepared and defended a dissertation or to a person who defended the dissertation prepared without attending the lectures. Total volume of doctoral studies shall be not less than 30 credits.

Doctoral studies and scientific research shall be coordinated by the Doctoral Studies Committee.

Dissertation of the doctor of science shall consist of the text and summary of the dissertation accompanied by the copies of scientific publications on the theme of the dissertation of the person who has submitted the application to defend the dissertation.

The dissertation must define the purpose of the work, formulate the tasks to be resolved, indicate the novelty of the scientific work, to review the research carried out on the theme of the dissertation in the world, to present the applied methods of research, discuss the results of research, substantiate their reliability and relationship with the data of other investigators, formulate conclusions and include other aspects which are relevant in the opinion of the dissertation writer. The dissertation shall be submitted together with the list of conferences at which the results of investigations of the dissertation have been publicised, as well as the description of life, scientific and creative activity of the dissertation writer– curriculum vitae.

Texts of the dissertations shall be written in Lithuanian language or, if approved by the Doctoral Studies Committee, in another language. The summary of the dissertation defended as a dissertation shall be written in the language other than of the text of the dissertation. In the cases when the text of the dissertation is written in the other than Lithuanian language, it shall be compulsory to submit a summary in Lithuanian language. The dissertation must be written in a received language.

Doctoral student shall be able to submit a dissertation for defence if he or she:

–        Sits all the examinations prescribed in the working plan of the doctoral student;

–        Announces the main results of his/her investigations in at least two articles published in (or accepted for printing) in reviewed research publications or research monograph;

–        Presents the results of investigations at international research events;

–        Meets other requirements laid down in the Regulation of doctoral studies.

The dissertation shall be defended in the open sitting of the defence board. The sitting shall take place in Lithuanian language. In cases when other languages are used in the sitting, translation into Lithuanian language must be ensured. The sitting shall be chaired by the chairman of the defence board.

The dissertation writer shall present his main working results and conclusions and indicate his contribution to the publications provided in the dissertation. Members of the defence board shall assess in the reasoned way scientific level of the dissertation, novelty and originality of the results, reliability and validity of conclusions, indicate shortcomings and inaccuracies of the work and at the time of defending – scientific competence of the dissertation writer. The dissertation writer shall answer the put questions and comment on the presented remarks.
